A drive along the northern residential section takes you to the impressive Parliament Building, whose stone mural records Ecuador’s history. Stroll downtown to visit St. Augustine Convent, its Colonial patio, cloisters, coffered ceilings and the vast collection of paintings showing the life of St. Augustine. Visit Independence Plaza flanked by the Cathedral, the Presidential Palace, the Municipal Building and the Archbishop’s Palace. Continue to the Church of San Francisco, one of the greatest religious buildings of the New World. Its impressive façade and atrium lead to its gild interior, a Baroque influence by Moorish style, with the winged Virgin of Quito at its main altar. Then you will drive approx. 25 km North of Quito to the Mitad del Mundo. Here the 30 m tall monument will tell you of the French-Spanish geodetic expedition of 1736-1744, which determined the position of the equator under the direction of Charles de la Condamine. Here you can stand with one leg on the northern and with the other leg on the southern hemisphere of the earth and visit the ethnographical museum inside of the monument. Furthermore you visit the Museo de Sol, where you will learn about the culture of the country and its history dating back to the Incas. In the afternoon you return to the hotel. Enjoy the serenity of the natural surrounding and explore the dry tropical forest, archeological site of Chirije or look for archaeological pieces on the beach. Many of the pieces found by travelers go to the onsite museum. Late afternoon travel to ecological shrimp farm (30 minutes). Ecuador was the world’s first shrimp exporter of farmed shrimp. Flor Maria Dueñas is the proprietor, and was the first woman in Latin America to cultivate shrimp in ponds and also was the first woman in the world to have an ecological certification for shrimp farming. Now inside her ponds are more than 15,000 mangrove trees, as a model for a mangrove friendly shrimp farm. Enjoy all the grilled shrimp you can eat.  And learn how to make the famous Ecuadorian Ceviche. Transfer out to Manta Airport. Evening flight to Quito/or travel towards Guayaquil.
