Wildlife Observation in Ecuador |
There are over 320 species of mammals in Ecuador, of which 25 are endemic. In Ecuador lives an uncountable diversity of rodents and bats, 3 species of tapirs (one of them is the biggest land mammal in South America), 3 different species of anteaters, as well as spectacled bears, pumas, jaguars, ocelots, bausons, stoats, wolves, foxes, armadillos, sea lions, whale sharks or the pink-colored river dolphins.
Almost 1600 bird species were found, this is about the half of all existing bird species in South America. In some zones in Ecuador it is possible to find over 400 subspecies. To the many specialties belong the condor, toucans, albatrosses, pelicans, frigate birds, Darwin finches or the flightless cormorants as well as the charming hummingbirds of which only in Ecuador live 124 different species. The smallest hummingbird is only 2.5 cm!
Under the reptiles there are 200 species of snakes, 40 of them are poisonous! Who is interested in snakes shouldn't miss the Vivarium in Quito. In the tropical and subtropical coast area live many different iguanas and uncountable species of lizards (lagartíjas), geckos and blindworms. In the Amazon lowland live in the shallow waters caimans (up to 3m). In the west and east of the Andes you can find many tropical land and water turtles, in front of the northern coast and on the Galapagos Islands also sea turtles. About 80% of the present animal species in Ecuador are probably insects. In one only treetop in the jungle there can be found 2000 species of which only 100 are scientifically known. Most impressive are the colorful species of butterflies.
