Toilets and drinking water |
The hygienic standards in public sanitary facilities can be very different in Ecuador but particularly in roadhouses, places of pilgrimage and public toilets in small villages, the sanitations are very dirty. In modern shopping centers, fast-food restaurants and cinemas the toilets are usually clean and controlled regularly. During interurban trips, excursions and round tours we recommend to take along always some toilet paper. Often it's not even available in good roadhouses, gas stations and even restaurants. In front of the few public toilets at the bus stations, airports and tourist attractions, some people sell toilet paper.
Always put the toilet paper in the baskets next to the toilets to avoid plugging of the pipes!
The tap water in Quito can be a bit chloric. This is a bacterial prevention. You can use it to clean the teeth, even though mineral water (without gas) is always to prefer. The The seaport Guayaquil has worst water quality throughout the country and in several water tests they even found excrements. In the southern provincial capital Loja and in Cuenca the quality of the tap water are the best in Ecuador and you can supposedly drink it directly out of the tap. Nevertheless, boiling water for the food preparation is also here recommendable.
