An alternative
for health and
relaxation in Cuenca
It is almost unknown that the city of Cuenca, as well as Ambato, has in its near surroundings a town called Baños with wonderful hot springs.
Located 8 km / 5 miles southwest of Cuenca, the village of Baños rises amid hills and mountains that offer a great visual spectacle, not only for the interesting topography but also for their abundant vegetation. Downtown Baños, there is an interesting church that was built in the mid-twentieth century. Its architectonic design is a replica of the famous Cathedral of Cuenca named “Inmaculada Concepción”. In front of this temple, there is a sightseeing spot with a fantastic panoramic view from where a great portion of Cuenca can be appreciated.
The most interesting aspect of Baños are its thermal waters, that are born from underground springs located along a volcanic fault of over 10 km / 6 miles of length. Water in its natural state is "hypothermal" and rises to the surface at a temperature of 78° C / 172° F (the highest temperature for hot springs in Ecuador). Many resorts and hotels use these wonderful waters, which after being cooled are maintained at an ideal temperature (38° C - 40° C / 100° F – 104° F) for their guests to enjoy thermal pools and Turkish baths. Visitors of all ages can benefit from the relaxing and therapeutic properties of these wonderful volcanic waters!
Baños’ waters have been analyzed by scientists who agree that these springs have a large amount of dissolved substances of soil that give them therapeutic properties for the treatment of several diseases such as rheumatism, respiratory tract, anemia, nervousness, stress, skin conditions like acne and psoriasis, gastritis, anxiety, etc. The therapeutic effects depend on the water’s temperature, the immersion time and the way in which the water is applied. Therefore, in Baños, establishments offer different experiences with the thermal waters, varying temperatures and offering various treatments according to the visitors’ needs.
For example, alternating immersions in hot springs of 45° C / 113° F or 40° C / 104° F and cold water of 8° C/ 46° F, is excellent for stimulating circulation and achieving a relaxing and rejuvenating effect. Turkish baths are also offered, where steam, rich in minerals, detoxifies the skin while it helps to alleviate respiratory problems like asthma, bronchitis and colds. Some people drink on an empty stomach a glass of this water directly from the slope, which is said to help detoxify the body and cure stomach illness. These treatments can also be complemented by professional massages, achieving complete relaxation and wellness. The use of thermal waters is contraindicated in very few cases: people who have had strokes or who suffer from heart failure, liver or kidney disease.
Baños is certainly the ideal place for those who want to rest and restore their health. Its proximity to Cuenca allows for tourists staying at the city’s downtown to reach the hot springs in a few minutes by car or bus. For those who prefer to stay overnight in the village, the lodging options are varied. Complimentary services such as restaurants, sports courts, saunas and Turkish baths, gym and massage rooms are all available in Baños. In addition, visitors can enjoy the exquisite local cuisine: the famous "empanadas de viento" (filled with cheese and sugar coated), “llapingachos” (potato tortillas), the “motepillo” (corn mixed with egg, cheese and onion), the famous “cuy” (guinea pigs) and pork prepared in various ways.
