Española Island (61 km2, highest elevation 206m) |
This island is located more in the south than all the other ones that make up the archipelago. Española Island is particularly appreciated under the bird specialists (ornithologists) because of the high variety of present species on the island, that makes the visit very exciting.
This island with 14km of length and 7km of breadth offers primarily two places of interest for tourists:
Bahía Gardner: In the northeast of the island. Here you can enjoy snorkeling, where many species are observable; on the beach you can find sea lions. But in particular you can see a great number of birds, that gather to amuse the tourists.
- Punta Suárez: Located in the extreme west of Española, here you need to stop to take a 2km walk that leads you through a stone path, where you can observe a multitude of nesting birds. You can also see the marine iguanas, that seem to spit on your feet, but don't care, it's only the excess of salt they expel through their nostrils. Here, at Punta Suárez, you can also observe and marvel at the spectacle of “Hueco Soplador”, a water fountain of 10 to 20m of height, around which the marine iguanas associate.
