The Colections
The discovery of a New World by the spaniards,
means the beginning of the incorporation from aborigin folks
of the pre-spanish America into the Christian culture. As
almost usually happens in this colonization process, the
different magical and ritual ways of thinking of the milenary
american cultures were changed for the believes of the imposed
religion.
The
best way of teaching the gospel were images, specially the
paints and sculptures that were brought from the Old Continent
and that contributed to transfer the ideas of the new religion.
This kind of visual catechism was often used by the first
misioners and religious congregations, stablished in America
in the XVI century, because of its good results.
Most
of the objects wich are part of the colections showed at
this museum, had a faith testimony that today is an important
testimony of the cultural and spiritual patrimony of american
folks. The well care of the noons helped to conserve the
valius colections that are showed. A great number of sculptures,
linen cloth , furniture and ornamental elements, were part
of the dowrys given by the noons (as in marriages) at the
moment of their entry in the monastery. Other colections
come from the Diocesis of Riobamba. The gold and silversmith
objects of the XVII and XVIII centuries are part of the
museology special fund, as the monstances, and among them
the one from Riobamba is considered one of the beautiest
of the Hispanic gold religious works, as well as communion
cups, large cups and other ornaments proceeding from the
old towns of Cicalpa and Cajabamba: wonderful works like
the crown, the scepter and the clothes dedicated to adore
the virgin: The Cicalpa Lady of Snow. The sculpture of the
Virgin was done in the XVI century by the Toledo's sculptor,
living in Quito, Diego de Robles.
Some joint gatherments were made by the noons,
like the beautiful urns of the christmas nativity scene, wich
are formed by small figures of different styles and epochs.
The clothes of different sculptures conformed by embroideries
and inlaid works have and keep been one of the artesanal traditions
of the monastery.
